Software of the day..

Altiris SVS

I came across this software today while researching for something entirely different. I joined an Altiris forum to learn more about it. I figured my school uses it on all of our computers, I have friends who work indirectly for Altiris, hey I may as well learn something here.

What did I learn about today? Software Virtualization. While many companies will probably implement this software for professional services, I am going to use it for unprofessional ones. It seems a lot of students here like to download programs – from emulators to P2P to AIM clients to operating systems. Unfortunately, downloads and installs don't always go as planned, especially the more illegal the software is. That's where SVS comes in :) SVS allows you to manage your system by creating "layers". You install your software into these layers. If something goes wrong, you can either reset the layer to its original configuration, or delete it all together. It's recommended to use it on a clean OS (one that doesn't have a ton of programs already on it). I'm going to try it with my laptop as is. We'll see what happens.
I think tech support didn't tell us about this one because they need job security :-D

The good news – SVS is available for free for up to 10 systems. After that you have to pay. I'm trying it out RIGHT NOW!!
